During his second year of private practice he stumbled on spontaneous healing, and began what was to become a meticulous experiential research study of intrasystemic healing processes. In 1991 he obtained his Doctorate in SHIP^® (Spontaneous Healing Intrasystemic Process) at UNISA, and has since refined this method continuously. His book entitled SHIP^®: Spontaneous Healing Intrasystemic Process: The Age-Old Art of Facilitating Healing was completed in October 2001 and is currently in its 12th reprint.

Over the years Dr JO Steenkamp shared his views on SHIP^® with other psychotherapists who came to him for psychotherapy. This culminated in the establishment of a training school, THE SHIP^® FOUNDATION, for like-minded psychotherapists in Psychology. Dr Steenkamp is CEO of this organisation.
